Pattaya Immigration Parades Arrests In Front of Deputy PM

Pattaya Immigration officials and high ranking officers gathered at the Jomtien Immigration building on Sunday to display the results of the recent Illegal immigrant crackdown in the Chon-Buri region to Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister.
Pattaya, the 15th of February 2010 [PDN]: On Sunday, Police Lieutenant General Wut (Chon-Buri Immigration Bureau Commander) along with Colonel Atisawit (Jomtien Station Commander) welcomed the Thai Deputy Prime Minister Major General Sanan Khajonprasat and the Acting National Police Chief General Prateep to the Jomtien Immigration building to showcase Chon-Buri’s efforts in the recent government crackdown on illegal immigrants. Thailand’s most recent crackdown occurred over the 7-15th of February and netted 684 arrests from 27 different provinces, adding to the 500 already arrested between the 8-10 of January. The illegal immigrants arrested by Chon-Buri officers had been gathered at Jomtien Immigration on Sunday to present their arrests to the Deputy Prime Minister, who along with the Acting Police Chief arrived over 2 hours late for the scheduled meeting.
Along with the arrested immigrants, a variety of case photos’s were displayed, showing the Deputy PM some of the results from investigations that have been performed by the Chon-Buri Immigration taskforce in charge of the illegal immigrant crackdown for the region. The most recent of these cases being the successful raid on a Pattaya brothel that was providing underage, illegal immigrant, Laotian girls for sexual services. The ladyboy owner of the brothel was also presented to the Deputy PM who questioned him briefly on a variety of issues relating to the illegal trafficking of humans and the related charges for such crimes.
In conclusion, the deputy PM addressed the gathered crowd stating that Thailand was determined to eradicate the ever increasing issue of illegal immigrants, congratulating the Chon-Buri immigration officers on their work.
Note: Various PDN reporters discovered the treatment of these illegal immigrants on Sunday to be far from satisfactory. They were kept waiting for over 3 hours to then be paraded in front of the Deputy Prime Minister. PDN observed one mother with an infant child waiting the entire 3 hours for some milk to feed her baby, which she was promised when they first arrived at the Immigration building. She still had not received the milk when they were marched back onto the buses. Human trafficking is a very relevant issue that needs to be addressed if Thailand is to continue its development, however; neglecting human rights in the process of carrying out these arrests and investigations is not the way it should be conducted.
