Earlier Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said talks had been lined up between two government figures and two senior members of the Red Shirts, who have held demonstrations in Bangkok for seven days calling for fresh elections.
Thai media also reported that protest leader Veera Musikapong had agreed to the meeting on Monday at noon, but fellow Reds insisted they would only speak directly to the prime minister.
"After we met and discussed, we reached the conclusion that we will not talk with either Satit or Korbsak. We will talk only with Abhisit," he told the cheering crowd, referring to minister Satit Wonghnongtaey and government official Korbsak Sabhavasu.
