Anti-government protesters led by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on Wednesday rallied atThailand’s police headquarters demanding progress on key cases involvingthe anti-Thaksin yellow-clad activists.

Bangkok, the 10th of February 2010 [TNA]: Some 600 police officers were deployed to ensure security, whilefacility’s main gate was closed as the so-called Red Shirts rallied there, paralysing traffic on Rama 1 Road, a prime shopping centre and high-end department store area.
The yellow-shirted People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) played a pivotal role in the movement to topple the Thaksin administration, with protests leading to the military coup on September 19, 2006. The PAD supportersthen seized the country’s main airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang between November 26 to December 3, 2008, in their attempt to topple theSomchai Wongsawat administration, which it said was a proxy for convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
PAD key leader Sondhi Limthongkul and other leading members were charged with several defamation and criminal lawsuits in connection with their marathon protest which occupied Government House, causing damage to the compound, as well as the blockade of the country’s two main airports.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s Secretary-General Korbsak Sabhavasu on Wednesday called an urgent meeting with top police officers to tighten security to protect Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajijva at his residence and while he is on duty elsewhere.
The move came after bags of faeces and fermented fish were thrown into the compound of his Bangkok home, as well as concerns over possible violence related to the planned rallies of the Red Shirt activists ahead of the February 26 court ruling on Mr Thaksin’s Bt76 billion (US$2.3 billion) frozen assets case.
