Bridges Across Borders Southeast Asia will hold its third annual Kep Trio fundraising and sporting event in Kep on March 6 and 7, with the aim of raising money to fund community development projects in Kep province. Events will include a 10 kilometre bike ride on March 6, and a half marathon and 10 kilometre run/walk the following day.
Rachel Bardigter, the organisation’s research and development adviser, said the event was initiated in 2008 by Nikki Wise, a seasoned runner from Singapore who had visited the project community in Kep in 2007.
“We have a supporter from Singapore who is a very good runner. She visited a project in Kep, and she had an idea to do a marathon here,” Bardigter said.
She said the money raised by the event will be used on community development, mostly in the areas of community training, human rights and education.
The registration fee for the 10km bike ride is US$75, which includes bicycle purchase, bus transfer to Kep, local transfers to the event, t-shirt and event dinner. After the ride, the bicycles will be distributed to selected village recipients to provide transportation to and from school.
The $50 fee for each running event includes bus transfer to Kep, local transfers to the event, t-shirt and event dinner. Cambodian runners pay $5, which includes a t-shirt and dinner but not transfers.
Ambitious athletes can also pay $100 to participate in both the cycling and running events. Organisers also suggest that participants raise an additional minimum donation of $200 to help the community projects.
The event will be held near Phnom Voar in Kep province where the community development projects are run.
Bardigter said last year’s event attracted more than 100 participants, mostly foreigners.
“But this year we want to get more people. We would like people to get running,” she said
