'The Bachelor': More folks are looking for L-U-V
Saving me from insanity, guest blogger Kathryn will be weighing in on The Bachelor this season. Take it away, Kathryn!
It's been a long time since I've followed The Bachelor. The last season I watched regularly was way back in 2003 when Bob Guiney was the first bachelor to be a previous contestant on The Bachelorette. It seems fitting that I return several seasons later with yet another previous contestant of The Bachelorette, Jake Pavelka.
Having been away for so long I wasn't sure what to expect. Not too much has changed. The women are still pretty, the bachelor is shown shirtless as much as possible, and before the rose ceremony begins, at least one woman has cried. As with most first episodes we get a 'meet the Bachelor' montage, a 'meet the woman' montage, and then the Bachelor meets the women for the first time. Several woman are creative and come bearing gifts. I always have trouble remembering everyone's name in the beginning and I cannot remember who brought what but the following 'gifts' were bestowed: a peacock feather, a bag of dirt, a mate picker, and an indecent proposal delivered in a foreign language (Khmer, the official language of Cambodia).
The woman who broke Jake's heart on The Bachelorette (aka Jillian) and her beau Ed show up to help Jake decide which women he should keep. It appears that Jillian and Ed interview each of the girls. While we're watching Jillian and Ed interview the girls we see a cut-away scene of Tenley taking Jake aside and telling him 10 things about herself because '10' is in her name. Cute. In a bold move, Tenley ends her one-on-one time with a request that Jake kiss her. He seems taken aback by the proposition but they share a little smooch. Jake ends up giving Tenley the First Impression Rose and says something about how 'talking' to her really helped him get a feel for her. I can't help but wonder if 'talking' is a new euphemism for kissing.
The Rose Ceremony comes and goes and it's not all that interesting. Channy, the woman who made the inappropriate remark about Jake and landing strips, does not receive a rose. I am slightly saddened that the only non-Caucasian contestant has gotten the boot.
I never expect much from the first episode of any show because it's main purpose is to introduce the cast and set us up for the rest of the season. Having seen the previews, I'm excited for some scandal! Lies! Infidelity! Jake storming out of an interview! Stay tuned! Excitement and shocking revelations are sure to come!
