A variety show featuring Muskoka’s finest performers — headlined by Vince Grittani, award-winning playwright, author, illustrator, performer and television personality — will hit the Gravenhurst Opera House stage this September.
The fundraiser, which will support the Muskoka Bike Bank Workshop project in Cambodia in association with Lisa McCoy, is scheduled for Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
Several musical, comic and theatrical performers are volunteering their talents for the event.
Performers will include: Muskoka Big Band; musicians Doug Banwell and Tim Sullivan; performers Ian and Pru Donaldson; Muskoka Saxophone Choir; Just 8 jazz vocal ensemble; Merry Winds clarinet quartet; the Peppermill Players; musicians George Kadwell and Kathy Kilbourne; the Gravenhurst Saxophone Quartet, and many more.
All proceeds will benefit a project to build a three-room bike bank workshop in Cambodia where bicycles can be stored, repaired and distributed, and bike repair and bike building will be taught to students.
Gravenhurst native Lisa McCoy is organizing the project as part of her ongoing humanitarian work in Cambodia.
“The Muskoka Bike Bank Workshop … will provide much-needed transportation to school for the impoverished rural children of Cambodia,” said McCoy.
To date, McCoy has received $2,000 in private donations from local residents for the bike bank project. As well, two area Rotary Clubs are committing another $6,000 in bicycles to help children in rural Siem Reap province and students at the Muskoka School with transportation. The Muskoka School is an elementary school that was recently constructed in Cambodia with the help of McCoy and many local donations.
It is hoped the bike bank workshop will be constructed at the site of Bakong Technical College, a rural college that will teach academic courses, but also important vocational skills, such as land management, farming, irrigation, animal husbandry and weaving.
This November, two Toronto Rotarians and McCoy will lead a team of 20 Rotarians in building the first two buildings at Bakong Technical College.
The talent show will support the endeavour. Tickets are $15 each and can be obtained through the Gravenhurst Opera House box office at 687-5550, or by contacting Lisa McCoy at 687-8538 or by email at schoolsforcambodia@gmail.com.
Doors open at 6 p.m. for pre-show entertainment, cash bar and prizes in the Trillium Court, with the show beginning at 7 p.m. Those attending can also enjoy refreshments and social time with Vince Grittani and other performers after the show.
