The Skilled Set launch at Chedi Thai Restaurant

Contiki Holidays revealed a snapshot into the latest Asian travel trends for young Australians heading overseas this year, at Chedi Thai restaurant on Thursday night.

Contiki took the opportunity to launch The Skilled Set, its annual Travel Trends Research report, which revealed that 50% of 18-35 year old Contikiers have travelled to Asia in the past four years.

According to The Skilled Set, the most popular destinations for 18-35s planning a trip to Asia in the next three years are Bangkok (45 percent), Ho Chi Minh City (32 percent) and Hanoi (23 percent).

Tammy Marshall, managing director, Contiki Holidays, said “Asia appeals to the 18-35 market for a number of reasons.

“It has a high level of accessibility due to budget airlines and new routes regularly popping up and offers amazingly unique sights and cultural experiences unlike anywhere else in the world.

“Plus, the short haul flights make it easy for travellers with limited annual leave, which according to our research, is the most popular time for 18-35s to travel.

“Thailand is particularly popular with younger travellers in the 18 to 24 age range, as they are mainly first time travellers, who want to visit more well-travelled routes first.

“The older crowd are more likely to have paid at least one visit here are keen to explore more further flung destinations, hence their preference for Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

“We launched our new Asia program late last year, which encompassed seven brand new touring itineraries in destinations such as Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

“The first tours kicked off in March and the feedback from returned home passengers and their agents has been fantastic.

“It’s very exciting to be a part of this phase in Contiki’s evolution. There really is nothing else similar in terms of both product and quality available in Asia and client response to the program’s release proved there was definitely a need in the market, as further evident in our research results.

“Contiki have a long and successful history of touring in Europe and North America and have tailored the proven formula to suit Asia, giving young explorers an authentic and unique way to experience this exciting region with other like minded travellers.

“We offer itineraries that visit each of the top three hot spots for travellers in the next couple of years. The 28-day Big Indochina Adventure takes in the sights of visits to all destinations offered in our Asia program including Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.

“Vietnam on its own is performing extremely well. The region is so varied that the program offer four Vietnam-dedicated itineraries, with the 10-day Vietnam Highlights and the 12-day Vietnam Experience particularly proving to be favourites.

“The flexibility of the itineraries we offer in Asia really appeals to the 18-35 market. Each include a mix of sightseeing and all the things that are key to each destination, plus a broad range of optional extras allowing clients to choose their own type of adventure, which is what our feedback, and results from The Skilled Set, has proven they want time and time again.”
