Cambodian Officials Urge Rice Intensification

DAP NEWS -- Saturday, 22 August 2009 03:10

Cambodian officials on Friday vowed to help promote farmers using he System of Rice Intensification (SRI), a method of increasing the yield of rice produced in farming. It was developed in 1983 by the French Jesuit Father Henri de Laulanie in Madagascar in order to gain more output of rice.
To widen awareness of SRI, The Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Fiesheries (MAFF) cooperated with CEDAC and OXFAM. A meeting was held on Friday with discussions participated in by expert officials from 24 cities and provinces.
“SRI is covers producing raw materials to make natural fertilization, water control, grass control, fertilize control, pesticides control,” MAFF Secretary of State Teng Lao said in the meeting. Yaing Sang Korma of CEDAC told DAP News Cambodia on Friday that “CEDAC started to practice SRI in 2000 in order to promote more rice output.”
This Rice Principle System followed by natural system is mixed technical elements according to the area to gain more output.
At first, only 28 farmers practiced SRI in the four provinces of Prey Veng, Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham and Kandal.
The number of farmers followed this implementation increasing from 104 to 750 in 2008. Farmers have said SRI increases output and outgoings on fertilser and other items is much less.
MAFF hopes that other farmers will practice SRI to increase rice output and reduce poverty.
